We all have one don’t we? A favorite story? What’s yours? Name it. The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings? Star Wars? What about Harry Potter? Do you see yourself as a Guardian of the Galaxy? Or do you just like it when the good guy wins? Gladiator or Robin Hood?
Sometimes a sweeping grand story over decades like Dances with Wolves or Forest Gump is required to draw out the details lay the foundation for thematic details to be played out. Sometimes a sequel or two or three, four, five maybe necessary for you, Rocky fans?
Narnia or Knee Deep in a River
The context of a fantasy world is necessary for some of us to really love a story Narnia, Middle Earth, a galaxy far far away. Or somewhere as close as a mountain stream or a Southern golf course is all we need to be caught up in a story that stirs our soul. So what place and time do you see your story?
That’s really the secret to it all though isn’t it? Why we relate to guys with names like Han Solo or Maximus? How we can get caught up in walking through a wardrobe into a magical forest or take the red pill and be drawn into a deeper reality. We know something about all of it. It is our story.
Good battles evil, truth defeats lies and the story of our lives is revealed. We know these stories, we have always known them but couldn’t quite put our finger on them. We know there is good and bad in this world and the world in our story. We just can’t quite get there from here. John Eldredge describes something like this in his book, Wild at Heart. We feel like we have walked into a movie 20 minutes late. The characters are there but we don’t really know what’s going on. There is an evil prince and a good king a horrible step-monster and some guys in suits with sunglasses on. Who is in control of this world or is anybody? Is good going to conquer evil, for real or not? Then why is life so hard?
So… What’s Your Story?
What’s your story? What about your life? Do you see it clearly? What’s the point? You know there has been some evil and horrible things going on and some good stuff too, how does all that work together, what’s really going on? Why is it so easy to lose ourselves in a different world, like movies, or Netflix or a good book but we can’t seem to make out the big picture or describe what’s really going on in our own
What if you could take some time to figure out some of this stuff? Would you do it? Would you like to know? Or are you ok with just a happy ending in some other fairy tale?
